writing biography about family member?

so, a member of my family passed recently and i was wondering about how i would go about writing a biography about him and his life.
can anyone give my any ideas about how the book should be written?

Your first step is to contact family members and ask them for as much information about him as possible. Do they have any letters from him? Did he keep a diary? Had he written anything about himself? Does anyone have any memoribilia that concerns him?
Once you have collected all the information you can from his friends and family, turn to his colleagues at work, members of clubs he belonged to, etc., if you can contact them, and get information from them as well.
Then lay out the information you have in a chronological order, and see where you need to do some hard research to fill in the gaps in his life.
It can be a real challenge to put together someone’s life, and you will often turn up things that are completely unexpected, but it can be a lot of fun as well – and it is something other members of the family will cherish.
Keep the narrative light and make sure there are bits of humour interjected. Nothing bogs reading down more than page after page of statistics so remember you are writing about a real person, and try to inject their personality into the writing.
Should i buy an external DVD player for my laptop to play region 1 US DVD’s or get software to do this?

Hi,
I have seen the other similar questions about playing region 1 DVD’s on a UK PC or Laptop, so i understand that the region on the player is set and can only be changed 5 times. So my feeling is that if i buy an external DVD drive and set it to region 1, or better yet buy the external drive from the USA so its pre set then i will be able to watch Region 1 DVDs without making any alterations to my Laptop.
I’m wary of installing software from unknown publishers off the internet you see and since something like AnyDVD costs $49, i may as well buy the external DVD drive off ebay for about the same price.
What are your thoughts on this?

What happens if an authors book does not sell and they have already spent their advance? Will they have to pay the publisher the amount they received as an advance?
I’m so confused.. one says yes and the other no.. could someone please clarify 
Everyone seems so split on this..
The publisher takes on the risk that the book won’t sell… that’s why publishers are so picky about choosing books to publish! It’s not the author’s fault that the publisher didn’t market the book well, or that the publisher decided to publish a book that nobody likes. They can’t take back the advance they paid for that book.
The author won’t get royalties… that’s the financial hit the author will take.

Every contract is different, but I’ve NEVER heard of an author agreeing to sell his story to a publisher with a "I Swear My Book Will Make You Money" guarantee with full refund of the advance if it doesn’t actually work out.
